The following article appeared on the Jeannie Journal on May 31st:
Over the years, I have been asked to create a stained glass window bottle. I always held it as a task that might be worth undertaking at some point, but simply did not have the time to undertake such a complex creation. For me, meeting Barbara Eden this March has sparked quite a burst of creativity and has me inspired to create some new and innovative offerings that have never been seen before. When I met Barbara at the Staten Island play Love Letters, I also had the rare joy to meet some of the truest fans of both the show and of the bottle. There were many people there who had brought their own bottles, painted by various artists and it was as much a display of the different bottle artists as it was a “meet and greet”. Several people brought photo albums of their collections and I was inspired to create something new and unique. I wanted to create something that would be the most unique bottle in a true fan's collection, and yet still be faithful to the show and pay proper homage to the original bottle. And so, I began the complicated process of developing my version of the Stained Glass Window bottle. To learn more click the read more below. First, I wanted the colored windows to appear smoothly and evenly colored, which I achieved using my own special method. I was able to create translucent windows that were both beautiful and technically perfect for this application. My next issue with the stained glass was that it had to be lit from behind which I think is a bit cumbersome for display. What if I could light the bottle from the inside? This idea really had several benefits, including the fact that light would not be directly shining on the paint. The idea of lighting a bottle with a spotlight continuously is a bad idea. Lighting (even gallery lighting) will cause colors to fade over time with constant exposure. The idea of lighting the bottle from the inside resolved this problem entirely! I decided the best way would be to configure an LED bulb in some sort of flashlight to shine down into the bottle. A great deal of effort went into finding a super bright light with a long-life bulb. I wanted to fill the bottom portion with light, so I decided to place a reflective disc in the bottom of the bottle. When I placed the disc and lit the inside with a flashlight I was both amazed and surprised at the effect. Rainbows of light shot through the windows, and made the purple translucent windows appear to be clear. I was thrilled by this stunning effect! The glow of light that radiates off the bottom of the bottle makes it appear as though something enchanting and magical is going on inside, and is nothing short of breathtaking. But I didn’t stop there. I wanted to take every piece of "genie magic" I knew and pour it into this one very special bottle. I decided to paint “Jeannie eyes” on the bottom of the inside of the bottle, so that you would see the eyes when you looked inside the bottle. To take it a step further, I painted the eyes with colored glow-in-the-dark paint. When the flashlight is allowed to shine for a period of time, you can take it out and the “eyes” will glow when you look down into the bottom of the bottle. Also, if you look very closely into the windows when the bottle is lit, the eyes appear to float on the rainbow of light. These effects are difficult to describe – as they say a picture is worth a thousand words! In addition to all of these effects, it should be noted that very special attention was paid to the second season design, and that these additional effects in no way compromised the execution of a beautiful and strikingly painted bottle. It is truly my “masterpiece” and I hope it will hold a special place with the lucky auction winner. This bottle will go up for auction on ebay in the evening of Thursday, June 1st. | |
